Guest Musicians & Collaborations
(This document was sent in by Chris Eckman of the Walkabouts. It includes a recommended album
by every artist to check out.)
Jonathan Segal
Eccentric multi-instrumentalist who played with Camper Van Beethoven (played violin on "Whereabouts Unknown" on Cataract).
Camper Van Beethoven: Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart (Virgin)
Brian Eno
(Synthesizer, vocals "Train To Mercy") He happened by the studio that night, almost by chance and recorded some tracks only after we got him drunk.
On Land (Ambient #4)
Natalie Merchant
She was then vocalist with 10,000 Maniacs (vocals "Where The Deepwater Goes").
10,000 Maniacs: The Wishing Chair
Terry Lee Hale
Seattle-based singer/songwriter (played guitar on Cataract & Satisfied Mind. I also produced his first two albums): "Tornado Alley" which he recorded in Athens, GA. with John Keane (R.E.M., Cowboy Junkies) is a fine piece of work.
Tornado Alley (Glitterhouse)
King Jesus Disciples
A trio of gospel singers who work in the streets of Seattle. Carla and I saw them sing and knew that we had to have them for "Your Hope Shines." They have one self-released CD, that came out locally, but I am sure that it would be impossible to find.
Mark Lanegan
Wondrous vocalist/songwriter, whose main occupation is as singer for the Screaming Trees (he sings the chilling 3rd verse on "Feel Like Going Home"). Both of his Sub Pop released solo albums are highly recommended, and are very different (dark, slow & moody) from what he does with his "rock"
band.
Winding Sheet (Sub Pop)
Whiskey for the Holy Ghost (Sub Pop)
Peter Buck
R.E.M. guitarist (appears on both Satisfied Mind & Life Full Of Holes
playing various instruments. I also co-wrote two songs with him for "Life",
he penned the music (they were R.E.M. rejects!) and I wrote the lyrics and
the vocal melodies. It was a real challenge actually, not to come up with a
Stipe-esque melody
R.E.M. : Automatic for the People
Steve Fisk
Producer, member of Pell Mell & Pigeonhed. (Produced "Wreck Of The Old #9" on Rag And Bone, and "Sleep will Pass us By" on Life Full Of..) Steve is an extremely talented musician, conceptualist & producer -- the Eno of Seattle, although he would hate me for calling him that! Steve will be producing the next Chris & Carla album in November -- I assure everyone it will be a departure.
Pell Mell: Interstate
Obviously one of our favorite bands, they called us after they heard "Satisfied Mind" in hopes that we would tour with them -- the tour never worked out but a friendship did. We were very happy that Dickon was able to play on the "Devil's Road" album.
Live At The Bloomsbury Theatre
Larry Barrett
He is a Seattle based singer/songwriter who has released two fine albums on Glitterhouse records. He played lap steel and mandolin on Satisfied Mind & Setting the Woods on Fire, and he toured with us during our Spring 1994 European tour.
Front Porch Singer (Glitterhouse mail-order only)
Ivan Kral
Ivan was an important part of the Patti Smith group (as both a guitarist & songwriter) and later toured with Iggy Pop on the fiery "New Values" tour. Ivan helped us with "Free Money", from Satisfied Mind and it was very humbling meeting & working with him. He was definitely one of my teenage idols.
Patti Smith Group: Easter
David Immergluck
David played pedal steel on "Devil's Road" and he has toured with us twice in Europe. he also plays mandolin and is a fabulous guitarist. We originally met David in 1989, when he was playing with Camper van Beethoven. He went on to be a part of the Monks of Doom with ex-Camper members, and has more recently played on albums by Cracker, The Counting Crows & John Hiatt (where he steals the show).
John Hiatt: Walk On
Mark Nichols & the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra
Mark is the fantastic string arranger who helped us realize the dream that was "Devil's Road." He had previously done string arrangements for us on "Train To Mercy"(Scavenger) & "Findlay's Motel" (New West Motel). He has written three musicals himself and recently contributed to an upcoming Sub Pop album by the former lead singer of Sunny Day Real Estate. Watching him direct the world-class genius
of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, is something I will never forget.
